Palette Knife Painting

This workshop will provide techniques on how to paint with a palette knife and produce different textures in a painting. Besides learning these techniques, my goal is also to enhance artistic expression, foster creative freedom with expressive, bold impasto strokes. Pyrography – Wood Burning with Chalkley Matlack

All levels. Adults and children 12+ with adult supervision. This workshop will teach you the basic safety and techniques to begin your journey with pyrography. The woodburning tool will feel cumbersome at first, but the lesson at the first half of the workshop will help you understand the different ways to utilize factors like angles, speed, and pressure to get the desired effect with the tool. After some practice, in the second half of the class you will create a piece of art on a beautiful piece of bass wood. You will take home the woodburning tool provided to continue your pyrography journey. Goals: -Learn how to safely operate pyrography tools -Practice the many ways to use the tool for different techniques -Be in a creative environment with people working on a common goal -Create a piece of pyrography art to take home with you. Learn the basics of needle felting with Amy Reader. In this class, we will create a forest floor-inspired needle felted scene. All materials will be provided, and participants will leave with a set of beginning needle felting supplies. This class is beginner-friendly. Pressed Flower Art

Experience a contemporary interpretation of Oshibana, the Japanese tradition of creating art with pressed plant material. Learn all the techniques and tricks with flowers: pressing, unpressing, storing, creating art and sealing will be included in hands on activities with take-home technique materials including a pressing packet and storage sleeve, and resource information. Create a 2D collage 5”x7”, sealed with lamination, matted and sleeved. Experiment with gel medium sealing on 3D wood and cardboard surfaces. All materials included. Beginners encouraged. Workshop 1-4pm with an optional hour of flexible creative time.

TERRA FLUXUS

Mark Bettis Gallery announces a new art show featuring Molly Jo Burke, beginning September 13th, 2025, at Bettis’ River Arts District Asheville gallery. This showcase, titled “TERRA FLUXUS”, Latin for Land Flow, captures the beauty of earth, its natural environments and the ebb and flow of movement in natures steady shift using glass and mixed media assemblages. “Terra Fluxus”, exhibition will run from Sept 13th, 2025, through Sept 27th, 2025, at the Mark Bettis River Arts District Gallery located at 123 Roberts St. Asheville, NC. The gallery is hosting an opening night reception on Saturday, September 13th from 4 to 6 pm. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. All works will be available for purchase. Molly Jo Burke explains with this recent body of work it is in the movement and flow of the glass colors as they are threaded on to the body of the sculptures and vases, or creating stacks of glass, similar to the playful creations of cairns created by carefully arranging and balancing rocks in nature. Highlighting color, form, texture and the opportunity to play on moments in natures patterns that are similar between disparate areas. Such as vines tangling and massing, bursting occasionally with flowers and seeds, or rock textures with bursts of moss or sediment, inclusions of transparent and opaque in the stone, with some moments of disruption made by man-made architecture. Molly Jo Burke, b. 1984, is a Cincinnati, Ohio based artist, educator, and researcher. Burke received a BFA (2006) from Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD), and her MFA (2009), and PhD (2024) from The Ohio State University (OSU). She has taught at OSU, CCAD, and The Studio at Corning Museum of Glass. Her work has been featured most recently at Toledo Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France. Mark Bettis Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 10 am to 4pm, Friday-Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 3 pm and by appointment on Tuesdays. The gallery is located in the River Arts District at 123 Roberts Street, Asheville NC 28801. The gallery features unique and distinctive works of art in a variety of mediums including contemporary paintings, glass, sculpture and mixed media.

Beginning Marbling

Hot Shop: 30 Minute Make Your Own

Receive a guided experience to create your own glass keepsakes in our glassblowing studio. In this hands-on class, you will work one-on-one with an experienced instructor to create a unique piece of glass art. Choose between crafting a paperweight, ornament, pumpkin, or cup, then customize your piece with your choice of two colors. Learn the basics of glassblowing, and feel free to ask questions as your instructor assists you during the entire process! All levels welcome. If you would like to share this experience with others, please book consecutive or duplicate time slots for you to each create a piece of your own. 2 spectators are welcome free of charge. Spectators must stay within the designated viewing area throughout the experience. Items will be ready to take home 24 hours after the experience. If you are unable to pick up your item, we can ship it for an additional charge. *Students must be 13 years of age or older and accompanied by Parent or Legal Guardian if under 16 years of age.*

Marvelous Monday Open Studio with Instructor!

Intro to Fabric Painting

You will learn how to go from an idea to finish piece and go home with your own painted 9×6” pencil/art supply/makeup canvas case! You will learn various ways you can take your doodles from paper and transfer the outline onto fabric. You will learn about supplies that are helpful if you want to directly sketch onto fabric. And then we paint! Lots of tips and tricks will be shared and all questions are welcome. You will be able to go home and know how to do it all on your own. These make excellent gifts! You will be able to take this knowledge and translate it to other fabrics like denim. No previous experience required. All supplies are provided. However, if want to bring a specific design or your own doodle, it will need to fit within the 9×6” area. Even better if its printed on cheap/thin printer paper. You can feel free to make up something on the spot! I will also bring a selection of designs that you can choose from if you don’t have your own.

Wabi-Sabi Monoprint Workshop

Get your hands inky and explore the beauty of imperfection with spontaneous mark making, textured layers, motifs and playful experimentation – rooted in the Wabi Sabi approach to Mono Printing, celebrating the beauty of the unrepeatable. You will have use of 1 5″x7″ gelli mono printing plate, inking plate, brayer, acrylic and ink, papers to print on, and a variety of paper and mylar stencils. Also there will be rubber stamps available to use. Additionally each participant will receive an 8″x10″ frame to showcase their selected master piece. Bring: Baby wipes, alcohol wipes and gloves to protect hands from paints if desired. Cost: $80 for one class or purchase a bundle of 4 classes for $180.

A Feel For The Furnace: 3 Hour Workshop

Ready to start learning the basics of working with hot glass? This 3-hour workshop provides an introduction to the fundamentals of glassblowing. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the various tools and techniques used in the hot shop, from applying color, to shaping forms. By the end of the workshop, each student can produce 1-3 pieces of their own glass art. There are 2 classes per day, 10am – 1pm & 2pm – 5pm with up to 3 students per class. Ages 13+. Under 16 must be accompanied by a Parent or Legal Guardian. No experience required.
